On February 5, 2026, in Belgrade, Full Professor of the Faculty of Medicine, Prof. Dr. Mile Vraneš, passed away at the age of 72.
Born on May 21, 1954, in Pljevlja, he graduated from the Faculty of Medicine in Belgrade in 1978. He completed his specialization in surgery in 1985, earned his Master’s degree in 1988, and obtained his PhD in 1990. As a physician, professor, and cardiac surgeon, he left a profound and lasting mark on the development of the profession, the education of generations of young doctors, and the advancement of cardiac surgery in Serbia.
He spent two years in advanced training at leading international centers in Houston, Bad Neustadt, and Leiden.
He served as Head of Intensive Care and Head of the Department of Cardiac Surgery, and since 2009 had been Director of the Cardiac Surgery Clinic at the Clinical Center of Serbia until 2012. He made an exceptional contribution to the introduction of modern surgical procedures and to the development of cardiac surgery centers throughout the country, beyond the Clinical Center of Serbia.
He was the founder and president of the Association of Cardiovascular Surgeons of Serbia, a member of the Serbian Scientific Society, and of numerous international professional organizations. In recognition of his scientific and professional contributions, he was elected in 2001 as a member of the European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery.
His work, knowledge, and dedication remain permanently inscribed in the history of our medicine and in the lives of the many patients he helped.
